BBQ Mustard Meatballs – Fast WLS Dinner
BBQ Mustard Meatballs – Fast WLS Dinner
If you’ve had a weight-loss surgery, or you’re on the road towards having a surgery, meals that can be made in very small batches are your BFF! This is why Gastric Sleeve, Bypass, Band and Duodenal Switch patients need to keep a bag of frozen turkey meatballs in the freezer.
Here’s what I like about them:
⇒ Pre-cooked and can be heated in small batches
⇒ Can be served with a large variety of low calorie sauces for new flavor
⇒ Lower in fat compared to beef meatballs
⇒ Comes in a big bag with a zipper seal to allow for taking meatballs out as desired…and is affordable! I buy mine from Aldi.
This recipe was as simple as 1, 2, 3.
I followed the instructions on the package and cooked these in the oven. You can also use a slow cooker or a microwave. (My guess is if you only want 3-4 meatballs, you’ll chose the microwave!) Then I tossed honey mustard and barbecue sauce (the lowest sugar I could find). And just to be clear I used honey mustard…the mustard. Not honey mustard the dressing :)
Bariatric patients beware! This is a filling protein (yay!) and therefore should be eaten with caution. Take very small bites (think of a pea) and pause in between bites, chewing well and stopping at the first sign of fullness.
Note: Barbecue sauce will bring in more carbs so be watchful of sugar content, looking for the lowest sugar option available. Low sugar bbq sauce options can be bought online when your store doesn’t offer much. You may also consider having more mustard and less bbq sauce if you enjoy the taste! In general I try to keep recipes balance in carbs and protein and even better if higher protein than carbs.
**Other ways to have turkey meatballs – with marinara sauce, with cocktail sauce and sugar-free grape jelly, with a can of rotel…lots of possibilities!
